Marine welding engineer, Lambertus van Ouwerkerk, founded his firm, the non-destructive testing (NDT) specialist RTD, in 1937. He built a successful business by realizing that X-ray inspection techniques could be utilized in order to check welds on ship hulls.
Van Ouwerkerk believed that NDT would play a crucial role in the use of welding techniques as a replacement for traditional riveting in steel construction.
The discovery of gas in the Netherlands in the 1960s was the cue for the next significant rise in activity for RTD, as thousands of kilometers of gas pipeline were laid across the north of the country. Key steps towards the world of Energy and Oil and Gas.
RTD's extensive knowledge and proven use of NDT techniques became hugely important to the development of the national gas network, as it performed detailed inspections of welds and other parts of the new infrastructure. This work provided the foundation for the recognition of the premier position held by Applus RTD today in the global pipeline sector.
